RECAP: Future Prospects Showcase

Recap of the 2017 Fall Future Prospects Showcase

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Future Prospects showcase presented by Open Gym Premier is one of the most all-encompassing high school events of the fall.

The OGP crew put together a roster of nearly 100 prep basketball players from a wide range of classes who participated in the two-day event which featured professional skills training, a college planning seminar and competitive showcase games.

Among the Saturday and Sunday standouts at American Sports Center was class of 2018 point guard Jessie Galloway of Long Beach Poly.

The 5-foot-10 Galloway was one of the more smooth and crafty guards at the event who proved to be difficult to contain both in transition and half court settings. Galloway is adept at changing speeds and direction to get to the basket where he can finish around contact. The senior also showed an improved 3-point stroke.

Another senior who turned heads was Trabuco Hills shooting guard Chase Anderson. The rangy 6-foot-3 prospect has always been one of the best shooters in Orange County, which he proved yet again over the weekend, but his explosive athleticism and improved ball skills is what truly set him apart.

Cajon’s Deshawn Washington was among the most impressive all-around guard prospects with his combination of high level athleticism, feel both on and off the ball, and ability to knife into the lane where he finished with power and finesse.

Los Altos wing Julian Lopez was probably the most under-recruited prospect in the gym. At 6-feet-3 and a strong 185 pounds, Lopez is an intriguing combo guard due to his combination physicality, versatility and a high basketball IQ.

One of the more under-the-radar prospects to open some eyes was senior Peter Serour out of Huntington Beach Marina. Serour is a high motor combo guard who brought toughness and intensity, especially on the defensive end. Serour checked the opponents top offensive player in each game and locked-in baseline-to-baseline.

Cypress combo guard Jared Brown was one of the more notable 2019 prospects in attendance. Brown is explosive out of the triple threat and shifty when getting into the paint off the bounce to create for himself or others. He’s a tough shot taker and tough shot maker.

Class of 2019 wing Joshua Jones, Jr. of Rancho Dominguez Prep brought his versatile skill set to the showcase. Jones, at 6-feet-6, has the ball skills necessary to operate on the perimeter and athleticism and length to get to the basket off the bounce and finish with ease.

Junior Michael Divine of Xavier Prep in Palm Desert was among the best pure shooters in the event. The crafty 6-foot-1 guard has deep range on his 3-point shot and can get hot from behind-the-arc in a hurry.

Fellow junior Felton Richardson prove to be one of the most effective finishers on the weekend. The athletic 6-foot-4 slasher out of Balboa School in San Diego is impossible to stop when he gets a full head of steam. He changes direction without losing speed or balance and explodes to the basket for easy buckets.

The top underclassmen at the event included 2020 guards Kevin Kent of Los Alamitos, Joshua Lee of Westminster, and 2021 Alex Archer.

Kent is a super quick and slippery with the ball in his hands and has the ability to sprint with the basketball and not lose any effectiveness with his court vision.

Lee is an explosive athlete and strong finisher who is best slashing into the paint and finishing through, around or over contact.

Archer, a freshman, has a ton of upside. He has good size for a young wing at 6-feet-3 with long arms and high hips, and he also has an advanced feel for a prospect his age.
